HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid and CPR
This first aid course offers comprehensive instruction and practical training in line with guidelines from the Australian Resuscitation Council and other national clinical bodies. Participants will learn to quickly identify emergencies and provide adequate first aid for sudden illnesses or injuries. The course covers essential skills and knowledge for delivering first aid in various settings, including community and workplace environments such as NDIS, healthcare, construction, and trades. It suits workplace participants and the general public seeking thorough first-aid training.
The course covers assessing the injured party, ensuring safety, contacting emergency services, and using available resources for first aid, including CPR, defibrillator use, administering autoinjectors for anaphylaxis, asthma medication, assisting choking victims, and immobilising for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains. It also includes managing non-life-threatening bleeding and shock.
Participants will understand anatomy and physiology, differentiate between adult, child, and infant CPR techniques, understand the chain of survival, document incidents, review incidents to improve skills and response times, recognise psychological impacts, and seek assistance when needed.

Entry Requirements
- Participants must be at least 18 years old.
- Complete the enrolment form and provide a Unique Student Identifier
(USI). - Successfully completed the Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) test.
- Have the physical and mental capacity to perform at least 2 minutes of
CPR on a manikin on the floor.

Training Overview
- First Aid Techniques and Equipment: You will receive instruction on first aid methods, including CPR and the use of manikins and AEDs.
- Practical Demonstrations and Risk Management: Engage in hands-on first aid practice, including CPR, and learn to manage risks.
- Communicate Details and Review of the Incident: Report incident details, follow procedures, ensure privacy, recognize psychological impacts, and contribute to response reviews.
- Assessment and Certification: Complete assessments for first aid competence, including CPR, and understanding certification and refresher requirements.
Course Outcomes
Emergency Response:
- Recognise and assess emergencies.

First Aid Procedures:
- Perform CPR as per ARC guidelines.
- Provide first aid following established principles.
- Obtain consent and use available resources.

Pathway
Students who successfully complete this unit of competency will be awarded a statement of attainment. Upon completion of this unit of competency, employment pathways include possible job titles such as first aider.
Students completing this unit of competency may decide to undertake additional studies such as HLTAID010, which provides essential emergency life support; HLTAID012, which provides first Aid in an education and care setting; or HLTAID014, which provides Advanced First Aid.
Students must complete refresher courses every 3 Years as the Australian Resuscitation Council mandates.
