HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
This training course is based on the national unit of competency HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. HLTAID009 is the updated national course code that replaces the former HLTAID001 code. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) refers to the technique of combining rescue breaths with external cardiac compressions. The course materials cover the skills and knowledge required to perform CPR according to the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.

Entry Requirement
- Participants must be at least 18 years old.
- Complete the enrolment form and provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI).
- Successfully completed the Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) test.
- Have the physical and mental capacity to perform at least 2 minutes of CPR on a manikin on the floor.

One day of 5 Hours Training & Assessment.

Training Overview
- CPR Techniques and Equipment: Receive instruction on CPR methods and the use of manikins and AEDs.
- Practical Demonstrations and Risk Management: Engage in hands-on CPR practice and risk management.
- Communicate Details and Review of the Incident: Report incident details, follow procedures, ensure privacy, recognize psychological impacts, and contribute to response reviews.
- Assessment and Certification: Complete assessments for CPR competence and understand certification and refresher requirements.
Course Outcomes
Respond to an Emergency Situation:
- Recognise and assess an emergency.
- Ensure safety for self, bystanders, and the casualty.
- Assess the casualty and identify the need for CPR.
- Seek assistance from emergency services.
Perform CPR Procedures:
- Perform CPR according to the ARC guidelines.
- Display respectful behaviour towards the casualty.
- Operate an automated external defibrillator (AED) following manufacturer instructions.
Communicate Details of the Incident:
- Accurately convey incident details to emergency services.
- Report incident details per workplace or site procedures.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information according to policies.
Review the Incident:
- Recognise possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers; seek help as needed.
- Contribute to a review of the first aid response.
Pathway
Students who complete this unit of competency will be awarded a statement of attainment. Upon completion of this unit of competency, employment pathways include possible job titles such as first aider.
Students completing HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) will be able to take further courses in first aid. These may include HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support, HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, and HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting.
Students must complete refresher courses every 12 months as the Australian Resuscitation Council mandates.
