In the Australian industrial landscape, there is an invisible undercurrent that shapes how we approach risk. It’s encapsulated in three simple words: “She’ll be right.” We look at the SafeWork NSW falls from heights 2025 report to see how our training offerings can help shift the undercurrent.
For decades, this phrase has been passed down as a badge of casual resilience. But let’s be entirely honest: “She’ll be right” is a liability, not a safety strategy.
SafeWork NSW recently released its Falls from Heights Findings Report, It provides a sobering, data-backed reality check for every PCBU, project manager, and site supervisor across the state. Inspectors dropped in on 935 workplaces during a rigorous, three-month compliance campaign. The regulator handed out $223,950 in fines and issued 1,058 compliance notices.

For the team at SafeZone Training, analysing these numbers is never just a cold compliance exercise. Many of our staff members and trainers have loved ones working on live sites. Because of this, these numbers hit incredibly close to home. Because of this, these figures hit incredibly close to home. We don’t just see regulatory percentages on a page. We see our own families, their mates, and the real people who expect to come home safely.
Nearly half of the visited worksites failed basic height safety tests. This isn’t just a compliance issue; it’s a systemic culture problem.
The Reality Check: Where Are Sites Failing?
The report evaluated height risks across all sectors. This included retail, manufacturing, transport, warehousing, and agriculture. Falls from heights remain a primary driver of traumatic workplace injuries nationally. Despite this, the on-site gaps identified by inspectors were alarming:
- Systemic Absence of Management: 45% of PCBUs did not have an adequate system in place to manage the risk of falls from heights.
- The Scaffolding Crisis: In 49% of cases, scaffolds inspected failed to control fall risks effectively due to sub-standard installation or neglected maintenance.
- Exposed Perimeters: 47% of building edges (including first and second floors, balconies, and decks) were left completely unprotected.
- Flawed Access and Egress: 28% of workplaces lacked safe entry and exit pathways for workers required to operate at heights.
- Unguarded Voids: More than a third (36%) of open internal voids and penetrations were entirely unprotected.
This proves there is a massive disconnect between “paperwork compliance” inside an office and physical safety out on the tools.
Actionable Steps: Moving Beyond the Clipboard
We must move beyond checking a box. This safeguards your workers and protects your business from costly compliance notices. True safety requires a commitment to engineering risks out of the environment entirely.
- Enforce the Hierarchy of Controls
Never rely solely on a worker’s caution or personal harnesses. PPE is always your absolute last line of defence. True compliance demands collective, higher-order protection. Ensure all scaffolding, guard rails, or fencing are erected by licensed professionals. They must be signed off cleanly and inspected before every shift. - Design Safe Access Pathways
A worker cannot safely work at heights if getting there is a hazard in itself. SafeWork identified a 28% failure rate here. Fix this by conducting thorough site audits on all ladders, stairways, and temporary structures. Ensure they are securely tied off, free of obstructions, and fit for the exact task being performed. - Transition to Active Supervision
Inspectors discovered that 21% of sites lacked adequate supervision for height work. Site supervisors and frontline managers cannot manage a high-risk zone from inside a site shed. Leadership means actively walking the floor to identify structural shifts. Supervisors must possess the authority to halt work instantly if a breach occurs.
How SafeZone Training Bridges the Gap
At SafeZone Training, we look at these numbers and recognise a clear directive: we need to change how we train our workforce. A template Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) won’t save a life. It means nothing when someone is standing on a live, structural edge.
We deliver nationally recognised training courses designed to translate directly into real-world competency:
- Practical Height Safety Training: We train workers to understand the physics of falls. They learn how to deploy higher-order systems and rigorously evaluate their environment.
- Supervisor & Leadership Capability: We equip site leaders with sharp diagnostic skills. They learn to spot failing scaffolds, identify un-barricaded voids, and confidently build a proactive safety culture.
- Custom Risk Audits: We partner with businesses to review their operational workflows. This eliminates the blind spots that lead to devastating notices or injuries.
A Shared Responsibility
Every worker deserves a safe workplace. Regardless of their trade or employer, their life must come before a project deadline.
Compliance shouldn’t just keep regulators at bay. It is a fundamental commitment to the people who build our communities and power our economy. Let’s leave “she’ll be right” in the past where it belongs.
