Pediatric & Education Care Practical
Participate in specialized, hands-on scenarios tailored to child care settings. You will master emergency responses for pediatric asthma, anaphylaxis, choking, seizures, and severe bleeding, alongside the DRSABCD protocol for infants, children, and adults. You must be physically capable of performing 2 minutes of continuous floor-level CPR on a manikin to pass.

Following successful multi-part assessment, you will receive your nationally recognized Statement of Attainment for HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting, satisfying all regulatory compliance for childcare workers and educators.
- Participants must be at least 18 years old.
- Complete the enrolment form and provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI).
- Successfully completed the Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLND) test.
- Have the physical and mental capacity to perform at least 2 minutes of CPR on a manikin on the floor.

- Legal and Workplace Requirements: Comply with legal obligations, workplace protocols, and guidelines from the Australian Resuscitation Council and other bodies.
- First Aid Techniques and Equipment: Provide first aid using action plans, equipment, and resources, including CPR, defibrillation, and management of various injuries and conditions.
- Specialized Care for Children and Infants: Learn CPR differences for all age groups, manage acute illnesses in children, handle emergencies, and communicate with parents and caregivers.
- Incident Management and Emotional Support: Document incidents, participate in debriefing, address psychological impacts, and support children emotionally.
- Assessment and Certification: Complete assessments to demonstrate first aid competence, including CPR, and understand certification and refresher requirements for working in education and care settings
Emergency Response:
- Recognise and assess an emergency situation.
- Ensure safety for self, bystanders, and the casualty.
- Identify the need for first aid.
- Seek emergency assistance.
First Aid Procedures:
- Perform CPR according to ARC guidelines.
- Provide first aid following established principles.
- Ensure the casualty feels safe, secure, and supported.
- Obtain consent from the casualty where possible.
- Use available resources to comfort the casualty.
- Operate first aid equipment correctly.
- Monitor and respond to the casualty’s condition.
Communication:
- Convey incident details to emergency services.
- Report and document incidents according to procedures.
- Inform parents or caregivers of incidents involving children.
- Report serious incidents to regulatory authorities.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality.
Incident Review:
- Recognise psychological impacts and seek help if needed.
- Participate in reviewing the first aid response.
Students who complete this unit of competency will be awarded a statement of attainment. Upon completion of this unit of competency, employment pathways include possible job titles such as first aider.
Students completing this unit of competency may decide to undertake additional studies such as HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid.
Students must complete refresher courses every 3 Years as the Australian Resuscitation Council mandates.

The overall HLTAID012 qualification remains legally valid for 3 years from your date of assessment. However, to maintain regulatory workplace compliance and adhere to Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines, you must refresh the CPR component (HLTAID009) every 12 months.
To meet mandatory national training standards, participants must be physically capable of performing at least 2 minutes of continuous floor-level CPR on an adult manikin and 2 minutes of continuous CPR on an infant manikin. Because this is a strict regulatory requirement for childcare licensing, the assessment cannot be modified or performed on a table.
